Change...Beauty or Beast????
by Connie Merritt
A new Millennium. The birthday for the next one thousand years. If I told you could have anything your heart desires, what would it be? Few of us would choose to remain the same. Everything involves change.
Whatever you decided was worth your wish is important enough to put your energy into making happen. Change means renewal, and renewal means freedom. Make the coming millennium the time you are going to reach out and become the person you know you can be. More alive. Freer. Lighter.
For the first time in the history of the human condition, we can alter the course we are on. We have the luxury to change our behavior and, therefore, our future. You ask, "How?" We have more knowledge of how behavior is modified, more resources at our disposal and more reason to change.
Reason? Change or die. At work, we must change with the marketplace or be passed over. With our family and friends, we must learn to communicate or watch them leave us. With our body, we must take control of our eating, sleeping, exercise and recreation or it won't support us. With our finances, we must be wise and mindful or end up on the streets. With our mind and spirit, we must believe in the power and justice of the universe. And, most important, we must nourish and foster love and sensitivity to our feelings.
Rockelle Lerner wrote a wonder book, "Daily Affirmations." I'd like to quote what she suggests we say to ourselves when faced with change. "When I experience emotional discomfort, I will learn to listen to my feelings. I will identify the source of discomfort. I will see what needs to be changed, and I will take steps to relieve that discomfort. If necessary, I will end relationships that cause me pain. I will not tolerate situations that create turmoil, anxiety and despair. I will not remain locked in any relationship, place or frame of mind that jeopardizes my health or my serenity. Change is necessary for growth, and I am capable of making changes in my life."
Change takes courage. Have courage to change. Courage is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear or difficulty. Do something! Take a class. Bank ten dollars. Read a book. Call a friend with whom you've had a misunderstanding. Learn a new skill. Write thank you/love notes to your family and friends. Eat a salad. Drink more water. Take deep breaths hourly.
But, the sad thing is, people won't have the courage to change. They say it takes time. They complain it takes energy. They don't know where to start. I've found that the real reason people don't go for their greatness is not lack of time or lack of energy. Nor is it because they can't decide. It's lack of one thing. Lack of faith! They lack belief that things can be better.
When it comes to your life, you must believe that things actually can be better. And, of course, don't forget to expect miracles.
Courage, my friends!
