Overcoming Resentment in the Workplace
by Linda Edgecombe

Are you or your staff suffering from low-level resentment towards your job?

Theory has it, that most of us who don't take responsibility for our life outside of our day to day (jobs), suffer from low level resentment which we then tend to bring into our jobs and workplaces. The number one commodity that most of us wish we had more of is TIME, second only to more residual money in our savings accounts. We then, go on to say that if we had more time, we would first and foremost do absolutely NOTHING with it. Just sit, relax and take a breath. Actually when probed, most of us have a great list of "un-dones" that we have neglected over the years. It is the un-dones that provide motivation for most of us to go into work everyday. It is these things that add the spice to our lives. So the reality is, most of us are pretty good at setting goals and working within some type of framework while at work, but do absolutely nothing to plan our lives outside of work. And we wonder why we are not getting done what we really want to.

In my presentations over the past year, I have asked all participants the length of service they have given to their chosen professions. It ranges of course from a year to upwards of 45+ years. With the bulk of most groups falling into the 20+ years of service. So it is usually at this point I make some joke about doing a workshop on succession planning, but also, I ask "why is it we go in to work, day in day out, for years and do very little to plan our lives outside of work"? This question usually comes with mostly blank stares. Perhaps it's because we are so planned in our jobs that the last thing we want to do is have plan for our home life. Or perhaps it's because we don't know how to do it.

What we tend to end up doing is just filling the plate of life with so much "stuff" all it feels like we do is run from event to event and eventually fall into bed and wonder where did all the time go… I have been speaking, writing and training in the topic area of Work/Life Balance for several years and it's only in the past year and a half that I have really come to believe that the formula for living a balanced life is not about balance at all. Balance does not exist, so we need to stop thinking around the idea of 50/50. If you work full time you will spend 2/3rds of your life at work. So we need to re-frame how we think about the parts of our lives. Start thinking about being effective or happy, or living within your values. But most importantly dig a little deeper and ask yourself. "What is it I really want to experience this year, next year, in my lifetime?" Write those thoughts down and add one or two things to your weekly to-do list that will move you towards those experiences. Here's the secret, you MUST write this stuff down, and if you really want it to come to being, you must tell a few people of your intentions.

Believe me you will not be disappointed and you will astonish yourself.
