Give Thanks for Enough
by Diane Sieg

Lately, I've been wondering: How much is enough? We live in a culture of conspicuous consumption, where more is better. More money. More success. More shoes.

Is it any wonder so many of us feel like we're not enough?

I see this in my own life. I have all that I need, yet I tend to focus on what I don't have. "I didn't make enough money last year…I wasn't quick enough…I could have done a better job."

Sound familiar? It's a vicious cycle: Because the more we have, the more we want, and the more we want, the more stressed and complicated our lives become.

Sometimes sincere acts of kindness and generosity can shake us from our focus on getting more. When Oprah gave away 600 cars a couple of months ago on her show (well General Motors really gave them away), the audience responded with ecstatic surprise and appreciation. But something else very significant happened. A follow-up show revealed that many of the people who had won cars passed their gratitude forward: Some gave away the car to a family member or friend who they felt needed it more. Others sold the vehicle and donated the proceeds to charity. These audience members felt they already had enough.

This is the essence of gratitude: That happiness is not about having one more thing. It comes from feeling like we're enough. It doesn't take a car or winning the lottery to make that happen. Sometimes it's the little things in life that open the door to feelings of gratitude. Like when, after a long week on the road, I was upgraded to economy plus without even asking. Or when I could finally breathe the fresh autumn air after several days of a cold.

As we begin November, the month of Thanksgiving, I invite you to take a moment every day and pay attention to the gratitude in your heart. Focus on what you've accomplished and what you have already. Remind yourself that you are enough, that you have enough, and that you already are doing more than enough. And while you are practicing your gratitude, be sure to include someone else. They just might pass it forward too.

In Gratitude,

I offer individual coaching, seminars, workshops, keynotes, and retreats designed to help you enjoy a more satisfying and productive life.
