Clearing Space to Grow
by Diane Sieg
"Let it go."
With those three simple words, keynote speaker Joe Calloway electrified last month's annual National Speakers Association Conference. He spoke about letting go of the old in order to make room for growth in your personal and professional life.
What was it about Joe's speech that brought me and the rest of the audience to our feet with applause? He delivered a powerful message: That letting go is an attitude, a way of thinking. And our thinking is the only thing we have complete control over.
Ask yourself: What things am I holding onto in my life? Like many people, you may be clinging to certain possessions; your image of who you are; fear; money; the past; judgments about yourself or others; useless habits; emotional baggage; plain-old "stuff." Now think about whether these things are really serving you in your life.
If they aren't working for you, give some or all a toss.
When you hold onto things that aren't working for you, it prevents you from trying new things that may serve you better. It blinds you to the possibilities that surround you.
When you learn to let it go, you give yourself an incredible gift: The freedom to think clearly and positively in the present.
During the year, I host weekend Mountain Retreats* near my office in Estes Park, Colorado. One of the first exercises I do is to ask everyone to write down one thing they need to let go of in order to be fully present, intentional, and purposeful during our time together.
One by one, participants share with the group what they most need to let go of as they throw their piece of paper into a bonfire we build together. This simple and symbolic exercise sets the tone for a weekend of relaxation, rejuvenation and renewal.
What do you need to let go of in your life right now? What belief, practice, or relationship do you need to throw into the fire? Let it go!
Remember, when you let go of one thing, you create the physical, mental and emotional space to let something else in.
I offer individual coaching, seminars, workshops, keynotes, and retreats designed to help you enjoy a more satisfying and productive life.
